Requesting an inspection

Inspections are requested by you, not scheduled automatically. Your permit lists which ones your project needs and at what stage.

Before you start
  • Your permit must be issued. Inspections can't be requested against an application still in review.
  • Any fees on the permit must be paid. An issued permit with a balance still owing won't let you request an inspection — see Paying your fees.
  • The work for that inspection has to be complete and ready.
  • Check the cut-off time shown when you request one — requests after the cutoff move to the following day.

Steps

1
Sign in at your portal and open your permit.
2
Go to the inspections section.
3
Choose the inspection type. Your permit lists which apply and the order they happen in — some can't be requested until an earlier one has passed.
4
Choose a date.
5
Add any notes the inspector needs: gate codes, where to park, which unit, who to call on arrival, dogs on site.
6
Submit the request.
7
Check for confirmation.

What happens next

You'll be notified when the inspection is scheduled and again once a result is recorded. See Inspection results.

Arrival times are rarely exact. If someone must be on site to give access, ask the office handling your application what window to expect, or whether the inspector can call ahead.

Requesting in the right order

Most projects have a sequence — work gets inspected before it's covered up. Requesting out of order, or after covering work that needed inspecting, usually means opening it back up.

If you're unsure whether you're at the right stage, ask before you request. It's a short call and it avoids a failed inspection on your record.

Cancelling or rescheduling

Cancel as early as you can if the work isn't ready. An inspector arriving to find nothing to inspect may record a failed or cancelled visit, and some organisations charge for a repeat trip.

Same-day cancellations may not reach the inspector before they set off. If it's close to the time, call the phone number shown on your portal rather than relying on the portal.

The inspection type you need isn't listedIt may not apply to your permit, or an earlier inspection may need to pass first. Contact the office.
No dates are availableYou may be past the cut-off time shown when you request one for the next day. Try a later date, or call.
You can't find the inspections section, or you can't request anythingCheck two things: that the permit is issued, and that no fees are still outstanding on it. Inspections aren't available before issue, and an outstanding balance blocks requests on a permit that has been issued.
Nobody arrivedCheck the status on your permit; it may have been rescheduled. If nothing's recorded, call the phone number shown on your portal.
You need an inspection sooner than you can bookCall and explain. Departments can sometimes accommodate a genuine constraint, but not one raised after the fact.
